Sen. Elissa Slotkin, D-Mich., said she believes the Democratic Party needs “new leadership,” arguing that the party has never fully recovered from its 2024 election loss.

During an appearance on SiriusXM's “Straight Shooter” on Wednesday, the senator told host Stephen A. Smith, “Every day there is a debate in the group about the way forward.”

“That's why I believe we need new leadership. The old models don't work anymore, including the Democratic Party,” he said.

Slotkin explained that new leaders are needed in both the House and Senate, adding that his party needs to focus more on a few key issues.

“The Democrats lost soundly in 2024. I was in a swing position, and I won that year. For me, the lesson was simple. The Democrats had many priorities. They tried to make everyone happy and answer all the questions. If you put everything first, no one knows what you really stand for,” said Slotkin.

“Donald Trump came in with one clear message. He said, 'I'm going to make your life easier. I'm going to put more money in your pocket.' He succeeded because he kept his message simple and focused on the issue that Americans care about the most,” he added.

Earlier this week, Slotkin said in his speech that Democrats must return to the basics by addressing issues such as the economy and education.

“We have to show people that what we care about is the economy where if you work hard, you play by the rules, you move forward and your children do better,” he said.

Slotkin's announcement of new leadership comes as conservative Democrats and other candidates posted several victories in New York's Democratic primaries this week, backed by former New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani, whose campaign has emphasized accessibility and improving conditions for working-class residents.

Democratic National Committee Chairman Ken Martin has sought to ease the rift in the party since taking office in February 2025. However, Slotkin has suggested a broader overhaul of the party's leadership to produce meaningful change.
