Norwegian World Cup fans turn Citi Field bleachers into Viking longship during Mets game

Before the 2026 FIFA World Cup, many expected and said that the United States would not be a successful host of the biggest soccer tournament.

As the World Cup games are about to end in the group stage, it has become clear that what was expected would not be a mistake. The matches were crowded, even those between small countries were held at inopportune times. Or those stored in harsh weather.

Some random German fan who wrote on X about how much he loved traveling around the American South was treated like royalty. He was invited backstage at big concerts. He was helped by airlines and politicians after the flight was cancelled. Many others have written about the hospitality they have enjoyed while visiting the United States. Or how good it is to eat at incomparable chains in reality.

Then there's another World Cup trend we didn't know we needed: fans of European teams attending Major League Baseball games.

The “Tartan Army,” as Scotland's National Team fans are nicknamed, had the time of their lives attending a Boston Red Sox game at Fenway Park. Singing the songs, even after the music ended, until the announcers on the national radio announced what an experience it was.

They then moved south to Miami, creating the best atmosphere at Marlins Park since the World Baseball Classic.

Now, we have another group of national team fans taking over the stadium. This time, it was the Norwegian fans at Citi Field who brought the atmosphere to the most unexpected place: a New York Mets game. During the first game of a doubleheader against the Chicago Cubs, they turned the bleachers into a trophy for a traditional “Viking Row” celebration. Even the Mets mascots, Mr. and Mrs. Met, they also got involved.

They also provided an unintentionally funny moment for the broadcast when Dansby Swanson hit a game-changing three-run homer for the Cubs. After the ball cleared the fence, the camera panned to right field where the Norwegian fans were … making a celebratory trip to the bleachers. At the Mets' home game.

These videos of European fans enjoying a slice of American culture are a comforting reminder of what the World Cup is all about. And a reminder that the pre-Cup doom and gloom was always wishful thinking. It was a great success, and great credit goes to America and its people.
