A Michigan teacher was sentenced Tuesday after pleading guilty to sleeping with a 16-year-old student she taught and recording the encounters, according to court records.
FOX 2 Detroit reported that 27-year-old Jocelyn Sanroman was sentenced to four to 15 years in prison in Oakland County Circuit Court after pleading guilty to sexual misconduct for the third time.
Sanroman was arrested and sentenced in June 2025 for the crime stemming from the sexual relationship in 2023.
At the time, Sanroman was a teacher at Oakside Prep Academy – a charter school in Waterford Township, about 30 kilometers outside Detroit – when he had sex with a student he was teaching.

The judge in charge of the case said that Sanroman recorded sexual acts with the youth in his home.
Sanroman told another teacher about this relationship, and the teacher contacted the police, who conducted an investigation.
Sanroman's attorney said his client has not resolved his mental health issues, FOX 2 reported.
“He made a huge error of judgment here. A lot of it has to do with his mental health issues,” said the defense attorney. “He's going to have to do that himself. He understands that, and he's working forward and trying to do everything he can to be a better person.”

The judge asked Sanroman what he was thinking.
“It's not my best guess,” he replied.
“This is a serious moral hazard, taking advantage of a minor and a video,” the judge said. “She sleeps with a small child in her house, doesn't she? And it's just disgusting.”
During the trial, the prosecutor read a victim impact statement from the boy's mother, who said the life of her son and his family had changed forever.
“I watched my son's name being publicly judged and criticized for situations involving a young child and an adult,” the letter reads. “I have watched my son change, he has withdrawn and avoids people because of fear and attention to the situation caused by this situation. I had taken him out of school to study online.

“His normal life, his education, his habits and his sense of security were taken away,” he continued. “This has left me with constant fear and worry, not only for him, but for the other children.”
As part of the plea, Sanroman will be required to register as a sex offender for life.

During his trial last year, Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald said Sanroman “is accused of using his position of authority to exploit a young victim.”
“As a teacher, I applaud the teacher who contacted the police about this situation, protecting other students from being bullied,” said McDonald.
McDonald noted that while a 16-year-old can legally consent, that does not apply to cases involving a teacher.
“It's because we need to make school the safest place for kids to be, right? Safe from gun violence, safe from assault, safe from sexual assault,” he said. “School should be a place where your children feel safe.”
