Grey's Anatomy Star Breaks Silence On Exit After Cast Departure

“Who's fired?” Shum Jr., 44, laughed E! News Sunday, May 17, referring to Dr. Benson “Blue” Kwan acquitted of secretly giving a patient an experimental treatment that was rejected by the FDA.
Shum Jr. noted that he did not know what to expect from season 23.
“I wish I knew. I'm in the dark like the audience,” he said. “But for me, the hope is, 'Does the audience want to see him go or do they want to see him go back to the hospital?'”
While fan feedback is important, Shum Jr. he clarified that “it's not entirely the audience,” adding, “It's up to the writers and Disney. But again, I think it's good to see doctors make mistakes, but also with good intentions.”
He concluded: “Not only was he chaotic, but he was very motivated to make sure that someone knew how to choose life over death.”
Season 22 of Grey's Anatomy went through a lot of cast shakeups as Amelia (Caterina Scorsone) previously chose to take a sabbatical after the shocking death of his partner Monica (Natalie Morales). It was then reported that Scorone's leave will last until the end of 2025 in an effort to cut costs.
The show previously reduced the minimum guarantees for its veteran cast to 14 of its 18 episodes per season. While some of Grey's Anatomy's regular stars were missing for four episodes, Scorsone's absence was doubled.

I'm especially grateful to Shonda Rhimes for creating Owen, and for the encouragement she gave me as I ventured into directing.”
He continued: “As that chapter closes, I look forward to what lies ahead—creating new work, telling new stories and taking everything I've learned into the next phase of my career.”
Raver, 57, also broke his silence on the news.

Sixteen years ago, I had the incredible privilege of stepping into this role thanks to the vision of Shonda Rhimes and Betsy Beers,” he wrote in his statement. “Since that day, it has been a true gift to express the incredible words of Shonda and our brilliant writing team. … To the fans – your unwavering dedication and support is the reason this show stays strong. Thank you for making this my magical place and my home.”
