Man Utd plan double raid on Tottenham to sign Romero and £90k-a-week star
Manchester United are now eyeing two deals to swoop for Tottenham Hotspur for both Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero this summer.
Man Utd plan defensive signings
Despite Harry Maguire penning a new contract, extending his stay at Old Trafford until the end of next season, Man United are looking to rebuild their defense in the summer transfer window.
The Red Devils have received the green light to sign Romero, and Tottenham are now ready to cash in on their captain, who has suggested he is ready to leave, as they find themselves in a relegation battle this season.
Less than a year after winning the Europa League, it looks like Romero and Van de Ven may be leaving, the Dutch player is also looking to leave, as he has delayed negotiations on a new contract.
According to a report by The Athletic, Man United are now planning to move the Dutch player, and with a move it is 'on the cards' no matter what division Spurs find themselves in next season.
United's interest in signing a new defender comes from Matthijs de Ligt and Lisandro Martinez struggling with injuries at times this season, and they want to bring in a 'strong, left-footed' midfielder.
The news has not gone down particularly well with Mark Goldbridge, who has taken to X to criticize the hiring team.
However, the £90k-a-week defender has caught the eye on occasion in a Spurs shirt, with journalist Suleyman Ozturk saying of the 2023-24 season: “He impressed again against Manchester City a week and a half ago and now this game against Everton. It is unbelievable what kind of development he is going through now; he's Superman in a Rolls-Royce.”
Signing Van de Ven perhaps makes more sense than Romero, given that he is left-footed, while Romero prefers his right, but the Argentine has outperformed his full-back counterpart in many key areas this season.
Statistics by Cristian Romero
The 27-year-old has just been sidelined for the rest of the season with injury, which is a bummer for Tottenham, given that he has been one of the best performers in a dismal campaign, averaging 7.06 FotMob per game, the highest in the club.
