As for How did they do it? There are different ways, of course, and earlier this week, Justin Thomas offered some thoughts, after being asked: If you were a college recruiting agent, what would you look for? How do you know if someone is going to do well?
“I feel like I'm a part of golf, obviously you can see,” said Thomas. “I notice a lot, or maybe what I take more than anything else is talking to them and the way they talk and the way they do things.
“I know I've had college players who are very relaxed, if you will, and it's hard to explain, but when you compare it to someone like Jackson. [Koivun]I don't think he — he doesn't feel like he owes any of this or that I should play like this or that I deserve this. He seems like he really wants to be the best player he can be, and he's not cocky, he's not arrogant, he doesn't think he's better than any person or any situation compared to another – I've been there maybe some of them.
“I would say to me, that would be a very big thing to see how they behave.”
Thomas was then asked what makes him different.
“You have to have some skill,” he said. “You have to have it – there's a lot of people you see trying to do something in athletics or sports where you're like, you just can't find it. I have some of those people in my family. I've watched them try to play golf and I'm like, you're never going to be a golfer, no matter how hard you try. That's part of it.
“But it's a good question. I'm not sure if I can – outside of the golf thing, I don't know. I think my work ethic and wanting to win golf tournaments and strive to be at the top, I think, has a lot to do with where I'm at. But I'm not sure.”
