NHL Rumors: Montreal Canadiens, Bryan Rust and Kirby Dach

Host: “What about Kirby Dach, who also filed for arbitration? Are you surprised by this decision, considering Kirby Dach's injury history and lack of games played here?”

Anthony Di Marco: “I mean, a little bit, but maybe in today's NHL, maybe he thinks he's more important than the Canadiens feel he deserves in the team. I just think at this point in Dach's time, maybe it's like, 'hey, I might as well try my chance to get more money.' Obviously, after the first gaffe in the playoffs, he came in a little bit as the playoffs got deeper, but I don't know.

As far as Dach is concerned, I think it's like, 'hey, why don't you give him a chance here to make some extra money on this thing.' But I don't think it will be like the big, big contract he gets. He's probably just saying he's worth $1 million to $2 million more than the Canadiens feel he's worth to their team at this point.

NHLRumors.com Note: A salary arbitration hearing for Kirby Dach and the Canadiens is scheduled for Thursday, July 30. Now the two sides can agree on something before the hearing. Although his qualifying offer was $4 million, Dach is trying to get more, even though the Canadiens want to get him for a lower figure. However, a trade cannot be ruled out, especially if Montreal is trying to improve elsewhere.

Is there a market for Samuel Montembeault?

Anthony Di Marco of the Daily Faceoff joined TSN Radio in Montreal and was asked about Sam Montembeault and the Montreal Canadiens. Is he the odd man out entering the season, given new contracts for Jakub Dobes and Jacob Fowler waiting in the wings?

NHL Rumors: Montreal Canadiens Take Action When Least Expected?

Host: “Anthony, just go to the area here for a second. When it comes to the Montreal Canadiens and the goaltending position, everybody is at the top in a small country, and that's great. So if they come back to work here, like, is there a market for Sam Montembeault? If I fast forward to mid-October and they start the NHL season, and what season might they be, what might that goal be, and what might the goal be for the Canadians. Which one will be in the American Hockey League?”

Anthony Di Marco: “I would think it's Sam Montembeault, and is there a market for him? Like, look, Sam Ersson has been statistically the worst goaltender in the NHL for the last two seasons, and he somehow got promoted by the Ottawa Senators. So, if you think there's no market for a goaltender, there's another position like that, and another team that wants to go up that summer” is the team that named him, the Florida Panthers.

NHL Rumors: Are the Edmonton Oilers Done With Their Offseason Moves?

They completely changed their outlook for the offseason, bringing back Jacob Markstrom Akira Schmid from the Vegas Golden Knights. But I mean, look, Montembeault had a really bad year, but it wasn't too long ago that he was the third goalie for Team Canada in the Four Nations Face-Off.

He has, another year left on his contract, and a reasonable AAV, I think. So I think Montembeault can show signs of getting his game back. There would be a market for him, and just like in today's NHL, he probably needs three goals. So whether it's in Montreal or somewhere else, I think we're going to see Montembeault get meaningful games this season, one way or another.”
