Patricia Richardson Remembers the Challenge Tim Allen Reunion

Home Improvement fans were happy there Patricia Richardson let's meet again Tim Allen in his 2010 sitcom Last Man Standingbut for the actor himself, one of his performances was not up to his usual standards.

Last Man Standingit was the first time I've seen fun,” Richardson, 75, wrote on Instagram on Monday, July 6, alongside a photo of her with Allen, 73, Last Man Standing set up.

He continued, “The second one [appearance] (w/Robin Roberts and a simulated visitor). On that second day of practice, Friday, I got T-Boned at 93 months old after a shoulder replacement I was still recovering from. A really painful weekend, ice and Advils were nowhere near enough, and I didn't want to go back to heavy painkillers.”

“I had to take off practice on Friday, I came back on Monday after a painful weekend, I didn't know I was shooting that day. I'm not ready, another hard day. I was shot the next day. It's not my best work,” Richardson wrote in the episode of season 5, which saw him play Helen Potts. (Richardson did it first Last Man Standing guest appearance during season 4 in January 2015.)

Last Man Standing aired from 2011 to 2017 on ABC, marking Allen's return to the network after 12 years. Home Improvement it's over. The show later moved to Fox for three more seasons between 2018 and 2021.

Allen, of course, played Tim “The Toolman” Taylor Home Improvement, which aired from 1991 to 1999. Richardson was named after Tim's wife, Jill.

More recently, Richardson and the former Home Improvement costars Richard Karn (Tim's sidekick Al in the sitcom) and Deb Dunning (Heidi) guest starred on an episode of Allen's recent ABC sitcom, Changing Gearswhich aired in October 2025.

In June, Allen offered Us Weekly a special update on the dynamic Home Improvement reboot.

“They always talk about how it can go forward, but they get stuck [because] there are personality problems for the boys right now,” he said of the three actors who play Tim and Jill's sons. Zachery Ty Bryan, Jonathan Taylor Thomas again Taran Noah Smith.

“They have their problems. I always thought it would be good if it was a story about them. That's a bit of a challenge right now, to put it nicely,” toy Story added the actor.

Bryan, 44, who played oldest son Brad Taylor, has had a number of legal issues over the years, most recently being sentenced to 19 months in prison in Oregon after admitting to violating his probation. He was sentenced in March but appeared because he is currently in prison in California after receiving a 16-month sentence for a DUI in 2024.
