Rangers are in talks to sign a better signing than Ben Godfrey

Glasgow Rangers are closing in on a third addition in the summer transfer window following the arrivals of Lawrence Shankland and Ross McCrorie.
They stayed close to home again with the signing of centre-back Ben Godfrey, a former England international, to bolster Derek McInnes' options at the back.
The Light Blues have reportedly reached an agreement with Serie A side Atalanta to bring the England star to Ibrox on a season-long loan, with an option to make it permanent next year.
He has been sent out on loan to Ipswich Town, Sheffield United and Brondby in recent years, but none of those teams decided to explore a permanent deal for his services.
The 28-year-old is still hopeful that Rangers will be the club he can finally bring back to their former glory after this latest loan move.
Rangers are in talks to sign the Italian star
There is reason to be concerned about this part of the business, as he has not played more than 16 games in all competitions in a season since the 2021/22 campaign, raising doubts over his availability.

The former Norwich City centre-back may not be the only one to arrive in Italy, as the club look for a star signing that could be better than Godfrey.
According to reports in Italy, Glasgow Rangers are one of the clubs interested in signing Palermo goalkeeper Sebastiano Desplanches in the summer transfer window.
The reporter says that many Italian teams and English Championship team Norwich City, managed by Philippe Clement, are also in the race to sign the 23-year-old stopper.
It has been revealed that Rangers and Norwich have both made contact with Palmero to hold talks on what a deal for the Italian could look like this summer.
However, the reporter did not say how much the Serie B side will want for their talented young goalkeeper, or if the Gers are willing to offer his services.
Sebastiano Desplanches would be a better signing for Rangers than Ben Godfrey
As mentioned above, it remains to be seen whether or not Godfrey will be a good signing for Rangers and McInnes, given how he has struggled in recent seasons.
In 12 games on loan at Brondby in the Danish Superliga, the defender missed 61% of his tackles and made two mistakes that led to shots or penalties from the opposition, suggesting he may not be the most reliable on-and-off defender for the Gers.
Meanwhile, Desplanches caught the eye with his form on loan at Pescara in Serie B in the 2025/26 campaign, and he could arrive at Ibrox as an upgrade on what McInnes currently has.

Jack Butland was very fond of mistakes for the Gers between the sticks in the Scottish Premiership last season, he made seven mistakes that led to the opposition team being shot or scoring goals, while the Italian made only three mistakes in his team.
Desplanches' figures in 90 also show that he can be effective in sweeping his defenders and being an outside stopper if he can transfer his form to the Premiership.
The 23-year-old talent also showed his skills on the international stage with Italy, keeping two clean sheets and keeping a penalty in three games at the U21 European Championship last year.
Although he missed last season due to injury, Desplanches is expected to be fit for the start of the season and could join the Light Blues to compete with Butland for the starting spot, which he may take away from him due to his form in Italy.
Although, Godfrey's form for Brondby and his recent struggles in multiple loan spells away from Atalanta do not suggest he is likely to start over as a Rangers star.
That means Desplanches could be the club's best signing if they can agree a deal with Palermo to bring him to Ibrox this summer.
