Man Utd are in talks to sign the £69m star alongside Ederson

Last weekend's trip to Brighton marked a fine way for Manchester United to end the campaign, as Michael Carrick's men swept the Seagulls with a convincing 3-0 win.

Bruno Fernandes got his 21st Premier League assist of the season to kick things off, although it was United's second goal on a day that had tongues wagging.

Good interplay between Mason Mount and Amad in the build-up was followed by a good selection from the Ivorian to find Bryan Mbeumo at the back, the latter man scoring his 11th league goal and third of the campaign against the south coast side.

For Amad, that delightful assist was timely after a difficult 2026 so far, the diminutive midfielder had yet to register a single goal this calendar year before that at club level.

There seems to be no sense that the Red Devils are ready to sideline the 23-year-old following these issues, although his playing time could be at risk if a new player is found at Old Trafford.

There could be a South American flavor to United's transfer dealings this summer, with the club moving quickly to secure a deal for Atalanta star Ederson.

Although there is no official confirmation yet, the expectation is when and if the Brazilian will sign, although there is no rush considering the 26-year-old is not part of Carlo Ancelotti's World Cup squad.

According to reports in Spain as well, Ederson could be joined in Manchester by another Brazilian, amid the club's interest in Porto starlet, William Gomes.

According to the report, United are among the clubs, along with Arsenal, who have made initial inquiries over a deal for the 20-year-old, suggesting that talks have already taken place.

The Portuguese outfit are determined to keep him for another season, although the presence of an €80m (£69m) release clause ensures that any deal could slip out of their hands.

Why Gomes' signing could spell bad news for Amad

It is the left-back that looks to be the best for United heading into the summer, although Amad's form may have created the need for an upgrade on the other side.

With Mbeumo often deployed as a forward under Carrick, as he also did during Benjamin Sesko's absence at the Amex, there may be a need to continue on the right.

Amad, of course, enjoyed the 2024/25 campaign, reaching double figures in goals and assists in all competitions, but that came while operating as a wing-back in Ruben Amorim's 3-4-2-1.

A return to what looked like a more advanced role in nature has not been fruitful, unfortunately, with signings such as Gomes potentially taking him out of his starting role under Carrick.

Porto's sensation may have been only 20 years old, but he enjoyed a real season of the game in 2025/26, as he first moved to Portugal in January of last year.

He wasn't given too many regular opportunities at former club Sao Paulo, appearing only in the top 20, even with Brazilian clubs that often throw young talents into the mix.

However, that doesn't seem to be hindering his progress, as Gomes' first 57 appearances for Porto have produced 14 goals and two assists so far, as he is usually deployed on the right side.

This season, in particular, the exciting left foot went to a new level, scoring eight goals and registering one assist in Liga Portugal, scoring one goal every 146 minutes, after starting only nine games.

Such a clinical, old center, Gomes actually missed only one 'big chance' all season, while he created six 'big chances', suggesting that his help should have been strengthened more.

Compare that to Amad's Premier League season, and the difference is stark, with the former Atalanta man scoring just two goals and registering just three assists, despite starting 27 times.

He did better than Gomes in terms of 'big chances' (seven), although he appeared to be ineffective in front of goal, with two of his goals coming when he missed six 'big chances'.

While 2024/25 was Amad's first steady first-team debut at Old Trafford, it has perhaps been overlooked that he is not exactly an up-and-comer, turning 24 early next month.

He needs to deliver more, as his lack of end product is a real concern heading into next season. Therefore, Gomes, if signed, could be ready and waiting to take his place.
