Trump says Vance's team can save Social Security and the limited budget

An anti-fraud task force led by Vice President JD Vance could balance the budget and help save Social Security, President Donald Trump said at a Cabinet meeting Wednesday at the White House.

“I think we have an opportunity to save Social Security without doing anything about it,” Trump said. “We're going to make our Social Security much stronger.”

Trump said Vance found enough fraud to be able to fund the program. This comes as the federal government has warned that Social Security could be phased out in the 2030s.

“The numbers we're getting – we have great people in Social Security. We're going to make our Social Security so strong, so good, that you've never seen anything like it,” Trump said. “We will protect, I said from the beginning, we will protect our people from Social Security.”

Trump also said he wants to protect the important human rights program, and Vance praised Trump for the team's success.

“The fact that we have the dedicated leadership of the president is what made this possible, because it requires — we have great people at the table — but sometimes these agencies can't work together at the grassroots level, and that's one of the things we had to open up and enforce the fraud task force,” Vance said.

According to the latest estimates, Social Security is expected to be debt-free by 2032, which could trigger automatic benefit cuts. This program is largely funded by taxes paid by current employees and their employers.

At Wednesday's meeting, Trump said the task force has already identified “billions and billions” in fraud, noting that if the program “gets really big, we're going to have a limited budget without doing anything.”

“Everybody was getting richer, and I think we have an opportunity to save Social Security without doing anything about it,” Trump said. “It's just the numbers of people who are defrauding Social Security — people who are 115 years old, 125 years old, getting payments. It's ridiculous.”

Vance was appointed to lead the anti-fraud campaign in March. The Trump administration said the program was launched after other states failed to crack down on fraud that benefited illegal immigrants.
