Do The Vancouver Canucks Have The Teams Wanted Pieces?

Can the Vancouver Canucks move players this off-season?

Irf Gaffar of the Daily Faceoff and the DFO Rundown Insider Show joined the TFP Hotstove Saturday on Sirius XM NHL Network Radio with Dennis Bernstein, Dave Pagnotta, and Ryan Paton. There, he was asked about a possible trade the Vancouver Canucks could make with players like Jake DeBrusk, Brock Boeser, Elias Pettersson, and others.

NHL Rumors: Maple Leafs, Senators, and Top 50 NHL Free Agents

Dave Pagnotta: “So, as they see, they'll see what they do with Petey (Elias Pettersson). Obviously, the Sedins will lead that as you suggested. But Jake DeBrusk didn't join the Vancouver Canucks, signing up for a rebuild. He wants to win. He has a decent contract for his voice from last season. Excuse me, is he the first guy to go?

Irf Gaffar: “Yeah, I think Ryan Johnson is going to have a meeting with all his players, and I think he's going to convince them of the direction they want to take. Well, it's one thing when you get a new coach and say, okay, we've got a new coach here, this is what we're planning to do, but as you said above, there's that question, Davebuld wants to ask the question, Does Dick DeBus want to be a part of that?”

NHL Rumors: The Washington Capitals, and the Vancouver Canucks

I know living in Vancouver is great, and all those things are great, but it was about the Edmonton Oilers last season. Now, with the Oilers, there was no way they were going to make that money work. Obviously, the connection to Alberta and Jake DeBrusk is definitely there, but he's a guy who could benefit or enjoy a change of scenery.

Let me say from Vancouver, there are a lot of guys on this list that we talked about last season that the Canucks would look at and say the player A) doesn't want to be here, or B) the Canucks don't want to be here, and Jake DeBrusk is one of them. I think when you look at who the Canucks don't have movement clauses in their plans right now, and Jake DeBrusk probably makes a lot of sense as someone willing to give up, and that they can get something in return.

If I'm a team that wants to make the Stanley Cup or a team that wants to do really, really, really well in the playoffs, and I look at that Canucks lineup, and I'm like, who's there that I really like, I'm going to give up real assets because we think this guy can really help us.

NHL Rumors: Could Elias Pettersson Relinquish His NMC? What Can Come Back?

Yeah, I'm not entirely convinced that Brock Besser is there for $7 million over the next five or six years. Elias Pettersson, as we know him, is not really in the next five or six years. And the only other player I can say is Filip Hronek. Filip Hronek will likely turn the Canucks back around if ever. I don't think so. I think you want to be here. There are rumors that he was named captain here in Vancouver, but again, guys, beyond that, there's not much here.

The cupboard is pretty thin when it comes to the Vancouver Canucks and their current inventory. So, if you're Ryan Johnson, Daniel and Henrik Sedin, you've got to practice what you preach and say we're going to take it slow, and it's going to take time, but at some point, you're going to have to make an L deal, absolutely, to try to improve the hockey team.”

NHLRumors.com Note: The Vancouver Canucks were always trying to improve the mix and get smaller as Jim Rutherford counted down the days until he left the team. There was no chemistry in the room. Regardless of what happens with Quinn Hughes, the Canucks have signed some players to bad deals. As with Thatcher Demko's new three-year contract extension worth $25.5 million, the AAV is $8.5 million with a full no-movement clause throughout the term. That's a tough contract to get rid of.

There are other contracts like this in the club. But the Canucks will have to start somewhere. Jake DeBrusk's contract was the contract that made him go whoa at the time. He has not changed as a player. But there will be a team that will run after him. Boeser probably should have signed elsewhere, but he felt comfortable there. Is Marcus Pettersson playing? It will be difficult for the Canucks to find trade partners.
