Fabrizio Romano reveals that the Man Utd midfielder will stay and become their highest paid player

Manchester United will talk to Michael Carrick about staying in the position until the end of the season and the players are determined to stay and play for the manager.

The 44-year-old player has exceeded the expectations of many since he took over until the end of the campaign in January following the end of Ruben Amorim in charge of the Red Devils.

Carrick has overseen a remarkable improvement in mood and results, with United winning the Champions League with three games remaining and in danger of securing third place in the Premier League.

This outbreak has put the midfielder, the captain and the coach of this team in a position to sit on the pole which it is understood that he will talk to the team before the end of the season.

United have looked at other options but Carrick has long been regarded as the best candidate for the job with the public support of many players.

The Athletic reports that chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox will this week recommend him for a role at a senior meeting.

Carrick will face the media on Friday ahead of Sunday's final home game of the season against Nottingham Forest, where Casemiro will get the chance to say goodbye to the Old Trafford faithful.

The popular midfielder, 34, who joined Real Madrid in 2022, confirmed in January that he will leave United when his contract expires this summer.

Casemiro has been brilliant since then, scoring five goals, and has missed just one game – Saturday's 0-0 draw at Sunderland – during Carrick's tenure.

The fans are desperate for him to stay.

But the Brazilian returned to training with the club on Wednesday morning along with Manuel Ugarte, who was also absent from the Wearside trip due to injury.

United players enjoyed playing under Carrick

Fabrizio Romano told his YouTube channel that it is “a matter of days” before Carrick's stay is confirmed, and the journalist also shared some details from the dressing room.

The manager has been praised for his role in bringing Kobbie Mainoo back into the United XI, the 21-year-old has been nominated for the Premier League Young Player of the Year award and is expected to feature in Thomas Tuchel's England squad this summer.

But he is not the only one who feels new life under Carrick, according to Romano, Bruno Fernandes is happy with the current situation and looks likely to stay after the last summer of speculation.

“I've been told that Bruno Fernandes is also very happy with Michael Carrick. And Bruno is not (just) a top player, he's more than this, he's probably a Manchester United player at this point.

“So the impact on a player like Bruno is very important.”

Fernandes is one of the club's top earners at £300,000-a-week, and will now be the top dog on United's wage bill should Casemiro leave this summer.
