Hertz, Uber's partner to build a fleet of robotaxi in the big push for mobility

Hertz is expanding beyond its traditional car rental business with a new partnership with Uber aimed at enabling autonomous robots and driver-led rideshare services, signaling a broader shift in the transportation industry.

Under the agreement, Hertz's newly launched unit, Oro Mobility, will manage Uber's vehicle operations, including maintenance, charging, cleaning and the use of autonomous vehicles.

The robotic service – which will use Lucid vehicles equipped with Nuro self-driving technology – is expected to launch in the San Francisco Bay Area later this year, with “expansion opportunities” possible in 2027.

Hertz will also provide and operate a number of cars driven by its employees on the Uber platform, building on a pilot program that is already expanding in Los Angeles and San Francisco, with additional markets planned.

The partnership highlights a shift in the sharing model from individual car ownership to state-owned companies. Hertz positions itself as a transport infrastructure provider, using its expertise in the management and maintenance of large vehicles.

Uber, meanwhile, continues to emphasize a platform-driven model, relying on partners like Hertz to manage fleet operations as it scales both human-driven and autonomous rides.

For Hertz, the deal represents a high-value bet on a new growth strategy following years of turmoil, while for Uber it marks another step toward a hybrid network that could eventually combine human drivers with self-driving cars to a greater degree.

“Partnering with Hertz's Oro Mobility will help us continue to bring the best autonomous technology to the Uber space and accelerate the transition to a hybrid network where both driver-led and autonomous rideshare operations can scale and serve communities reliably and efficiently,” said UBER's Andrew Macdonald, in a statement.

“By combining Uber's global platform with Oro's market leadership and dedicated vehicle management expertise, we are well-equipped to meet the growing demand for rideshare and deliver a seamless, high-quality passenger experience across the entire mobility ecosystem.”
