Detroit Red Wings Open For Any Front Office Building

How will the Detroit Red Wings organize their front office?
Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman was on NHL Tonight on the NHL Network to discuss how the Detroit Red Wings will move forward after Steve Yzerman steps down as general manager. Can they stick with one person in charge or go to a two-tier system?

Who Will Replace Steve Yzerman in Detroit as General Manager?
Billy Jaffe: “Now I'm back to hockey in Detroit. So what's next? I mean, I know it's still early, but you know what's next for this team? They've got a few guys in the house. There's a few guys outside, maybe. I know a lot of guys would be interested, but does it feel to you like they're starting to sit outside the organization, or do they feel outside the organization first?
Elliotte Friedman: “You know what, Billy? I think, first of all, we're still, like you said, very early in the process. This has just happened, and it's taken a lot of people by surprise. But one thing I've heard is that the Red Wings are going into this with an open mind, that they're going to cast a wide net, and they're going to give their internal choices about Hown's Dr. give them opportunities, but they're also going to go outside.
They're going into this with no preconceived notions, and they're going into this with another thing that I've been wondering, and I've been asking this a lot, Billy, do they do a one-person structure like Yzerman, where one person is the president and the general manager, or do they go to a two-person structure where there's a president and there's a different general manager?
The timing of Steve Yzerman's announcement in Detroit is odd
And I've heard that the Red Wings are open to all kinds of ideas. As they're going to listen, they're going to hear what people have to say, and eventually, ultimately, they're going to come in on who the right person or people are, and build a structure around that. It's like what Nashville did until they found the right guy.
And they came out, they said: “We're going to build a structure around that. I think that's what they're going to do. But that's what I've been told: they're open-minded, internally and externally, to who they're going to talk to, and I really agree with you. I think this is going to be a desirable job.
I know the Red Wings haven't had much success over the past few years, but they are still the Detroit Red Wings. They have one of the best stadiums in the league. They have resources. I think there will be a lot of interest.

We talked about Horcoff and Draper inside. You'll hear a lot of names, like hey, Brendan Shanahan. That's one of the first people I can think of who left Toronto in a better place than they found it. But I think there will be more, and I think they will go out there, they will talk to a lot of people. They will decide who they like, and then they will find out how the building will be built around them.”
NHLRumors.com note: As mentioned before, the best idea for the Red Wings is to look outside the organization and find someone who is not tied to it. The usual suspects will be mentioned, such as Shanahan, Horcoff, Ryan Martin, Marc Bergevin, and a possible reunion with Jim Nill, but it might make sense to give someone like Evan Gold, Brett Petersen, Darren Yorke, Sam Ventura, Brandon Pridham, Josh Flynn, or Tim Barnes.
