Panthers Coach Dave Canales Opens Up About Cancer Threat

Carolina Panthers head coach Dave Canales underwent a procedure to remove a small area of cancer from his nose, he revealed at a small camp in Carolina on Tuesday, June 9.
Canales, 45, said it was a basal cell carcinoma that was discovered during a routine check-up two months ago.
“It's a good reminder not to take these things for granted,” Canales told reporters. It was a type of skin cancer in a small area, and they were able to get rid of it.
Basal cell carcinoma is a curable and common form of skin cancer. It usually presents as a “slightly visible bump on the skin” and is usually found on parts of the body that get the most sunlight, according to the Mayo Clinic.
Canales said his mother had battled skin cancer in her 40s, which made her use sunscreen diligently.
“You can imagine a kid from Southern California playing outdoor sports and then getting into coaching, right?” Canales said.
Canales is entering his third season as the head coach of the Panthers, his first such stint in the NFL. After going 5-12 in his first year, he led Carolina to the playoffs in 2025-26, where the Panthers lost to the Los Angeles Rams in the Wild Card Round.
Dave made headlines in January when the roles in the 2022 book he wrote with his wife, Lizzy Canalesreappeared. A book titled, “This Marriage?
“I would go out with my friends and take my ring off, pretend I was single depending on who was around,” Dave wrote. “This didn't happen all the time, but I left a lock on the door for cheating.”
Dave and Lizzy married in 2006 and have four children: Ashby, Ben, Bea and Amaya.
“I cheated on Lizzy for the first time at my bachelor party one month before we got married,” he added. “Since we started our relationship, I would drink alcohol and go out with my friends, except for Lizzy.
The couple opened up about their marital problems in an effort to help other couples going through similar situations.
“We had to really think about how we would be exposed as an existing couple in public service,” Dave wrote in the introduction. Telling people about our scars meant being willing to tell people the truth about how our marriage was failing.
