A standoff involving a man who allegedly made bomb threats at a Chase bank in downtown Bakersfield, California, continued into Tuesday evening as negotiators tried to secure the release of people still inside the building.
The Bakersfield Police Department said officers responded just after 1 a.m. to a bomb threat at the Chase Bank near Chester Avenue and 17th Street.
During a press conference, Bakersfield police Sgt. Eric Celedon said authorities discovered that an unknown man entered the bank and left an unknown number of members of the public inside.
“What I can assure the public right now is that all resources are available at this location,” Celedon said, adding that SWAT officers, bomb squad personnel, K-9 teams, negotiators and drone operators have been deployed to the scene.

In a document written on X, the Ministry described the incident as a “confirmed bomb threat” and urged residents to avoid the city center, warning that road closures will continue until further notice.
According to the local station KBAK, the authorities believe that the suspect may have had a bomb strapped to his body and that he had locked up many people inside the building.

The station reported that one person was released safely just before 5 p.m. following negotiations involving Bakersfield police and an FBI negotiation team.
“Right now, everyone is still inside the building, and everyone is safe,” Celedon said.

The agency also reported that several city buildings, including City Hall North, City Hall South, the Development Services Building and Bakersfield Police Headquarters, were placed on lockdown due to the nearby incident.
In a statement obtained by KBAK, Bakersfield Mayor Karen Goh said city officials are closely monitoring the situation and thanked law enforcement for their response.
